This will be completed in both, a bathroom and kitchen, including finishing with grout, silicone and polishing.
Once you have learnt the patterns, you will then progress onto planning out full rooms including for focal points such as windows and basins in each room. Following this you will tile full box sections to a professional standard including learning the dreaded 3 – way mitre.
Let’s face it, nothings perfect
A major part of tiling today is knowing how to rectify and overcome damaged walls and floors and all of the problems they through your way!
In this part of the course you will learn & complete the techniques for framing an un-square window, un-level walls, patching in rough & uneven walls and floors using patch repair mortar and leveling compounds and much more to help you to achieve that ‘brilliant flush’ finish.
The Diamond School of Excellence…
During your course you will attend a few theory days in the highly spoke about ‘Prestigious Classroom’. This will include visits from a local banking advisor, marketing advisors, technical reps from leading adhesive companies and of Corse, very informative business start up training from your tutor on such things as, how and where to advertise, marketing your business, how to deal with customers in a professional manor, setting up trade accounts and much more! This is also the perfect time for discussions and any questions & answers you may have.
Getting on your knees
Right, onto floors, you will learn and complete the 4 most popular patterns of today.
This will include straight set, brick set, taco inserts (modular pattern) and diamonds (45°). You will be actually sticking this down and grouting in both a bathroom and kitchen.
You will learn the most professional and best developed ways of measuring and cutting around toilets and pedestals that leave you wanting more and more!
Get ready… it’s your first job!
Only half way through your course and it’s time to complete your first job!
In this part of the course, you will actually take this project on board as if it’s your first job, you will need to put everything you’ve learnt so far into play for this one.
Starting from measuring and quoting, you will need to provide the customer with a price and an amount of tiles and materials needed to complete a full bathroom. Following this you will be given a time limit in which the job needs to be completed.
This won’t be a straight forward bathroom either, it will include at least 2 different patterns, a boarder, a completely tiled floor and bath panel.
Wow… now that looks great!
After completing the full room spec in your bathroom, you’ll need to step it up a gear for week 5!
In this part of the course you will complete a full kitchen with a specialist design thrown at you and if that’s not testing enough then the hand cut centre piece (by you) should really test your skills as this will be putting you a step ahead of most other tilers out there today!
Ditra what, uncoupling who?
Ditra matting from SCHLÜTER® Systems is an un-coupling membrane that gives the tiles independent moment from the floor. This means that when the concrete floor moves/cracks it doesn’t project the crack onto the tiles. This is one of the main reasons Ditra matting is being installed under newly tiled floors today but it’s becoming more and more the role of a tiler and with not enough of the trade knowing the correct way of installing it, this is the perfect time to learn properly!
The final week is split into 2 projects, beginning with floors, you will, install Ditra matting into a kitchen/bathroom, fully install an under-tile heating system, on top of this you will use a leveling compound to bring the floor up to a flat, level finish and will then fit a natural stone floor including sealing and grouting to finish off.
The second project will include, tanking out a shower area using a wet room materials such as, Marmox Boards / Uni Drains / Waterproof Membranes etc. This will then be finished off using glass mosaics to give it that professional touch.
Also included in the 5th & 6th week of your course is 2 days of plastering, where you will learn how to apply backing and finishing coats of plaster and also installing angle beads etc.
Great… just what I needed!
During your course with Diamond Training Group you will be given hand-outs on all the relevant info at the time, this includes information such as different types of mitre cuts that you will need to complete with the plastic and metal edging trims, info on different sub-straights and the weight they can handle, preparation prior to tiling and pricing variations. That alongside the info pack you receive upon completing your course should really keep your newly acquired skills fresh on a day to day basis!
